Obviously, at HPA we are focused on building businesses. However, one question we always ask entrepreneurs is, “What’s your exit strategy?”. It’s not that we want to sell the business right away, but as investors in the business we want the entrepreneur to have some idea about how we will get our money back out of the business. Investors in start ups are not interested in businesses that give back recurring dividends. We are interested in scalable growth that can be sold to another company, or in a rare occurrence, listed through a public offering on a stock exchange.
